A Toast to Our Hosts

Much appreciation to our hosts and partners at the Racine Public Library and the Racine Heritage Museum for bringing the Tour exhibit and events to the vibrant and historic city of Racine. While holding events at the Racine Public Library along the beautiful Lake Michigan shore, we were delighted to hear many stories from the community. The experiences shared first-hand from former Racine Belles baseball players Joyce Westerman and Stash Batikis were inspiring and will not be forgotten.

We also thank the Racine Montessori School 4th, 5th, and 6th graders who visited the Racine Public Library for two days of their first week of school for the Wisconsin History Tour. Students selected local topics to create their own group websites. This project is based on the National History Day model of students completing in-depth historical research projects. Learn more about NHD in Wisconsin here.

Explore Racine's History through the websites built by Racine Montessori School 4th, 5th, and 6th graders!

Racine Public Library

75 7th St, Racine, WI

racinelibrary.info

In 1895 a group of citizens, spearheaded by the Woman's Club of Racine, developed a Library Association to help establish a free public library. Due in large part to the untiring efforts of these citizens over the next two years, the city council passed a resolution to levy a .25 mill tax for library support. Subsequently, a nine-member library board was appointed. With funding, however small, and a governing body, the establishment of a public library was underway, and the Racine Public Library opened its doors in 1897.

Today the mission of the Racine Public Library is to enhance our community's quality of life by providing information, ideas, and creative works. The Racine Public Mobile Library visits various locations throughout Racine County.
