A Toast to Our Hosts

The Tour in Appleton started out magical and ended with fantastic-but true-fish tales from Lake Winnebago. It was a wonderful week in Appleton thanks to the fun, outgoing and ambitious staff at the History Museum at the Castle.

We knew our stay in Appleton was going to be magical from the huge turnout for the Meet and Greet. However, the real magic began with Tristan Crist performing illusions at noon, followed by presentations from Circus World staff on magic in the circus and Wisconsin, and Tom Boldt, of Appleton, who shared his expertise on Appleton's own Harry Houdini.

On Wednesday we took a trip to the past and the future on the Fox River with panelists Harlen Kiesow, co-CEO of the Fox River Navigational System Authority, Candice Mortara, executive director Fox-Wisconsin Heritage Parkway, and Anne Biebel of Cornerstone Preservation.

On Wednesday evening Michael Edmonds spoke to the board and members of the Outagamie County Historical Society, as well as the public, at the 143rd annual dinner of the organization.

Just down the street from the History Museum, Jim's Place welcomed the speakeasy History Happy Hour with period cocktails, jazzy music, and exceptional hospitality on Thursday evening. They shared the long history of the establishment, including secret buzzers that signaled drinkers to hide their hooch from the approaching police during prohibition!

We ended with fish tales from Kathleen Schmidt-Kline who shared the local love of sturgeon fishing illustrated in the book she co-authored, "People of the Sturgeon."

We sincerely thank all the community members who presented and the great staff at the History Museum at the Castle for hosting us for six weeks in Appleton and their excellent hospitality.
